POLICY BRIEFING: ACOs: The Future of Coordinated Care

As health care moves toward paying for value of care rather than volume of services, Congress has legislated, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have implemented, alternative payment models. The Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), in which Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) participate, is a key part of this move. The MSSP is a vital part of how CMS intends to achieve the goal of tying 50 percent of Medicare payments to value and quality by 2018.

Bringing together members of Congress, physicians and industry stakeholders, this policy briefing will explore how the recently-released CMS rule impacts the MSSP, the progress ACOs are making to achieve health care savings, and the work ACOs are doing to replace unnecessary care with necessary care.
